HHS commits $10 million to curb tobacco use, obesity. Of the 10 organizations receiving $1 million grants, seven organizations will receive funding for obesity prevention and three will receive funding for tobacco prevention and cessation. A contract for $28 million recently was awarded to the Academy for Educational Development. This new media contract also will develop consumer materials for First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign aimed at preventing childhood obesity. Fatty foods may cause cocaine-like addiction. A new study in rats suggests that high-fat, high-calorie foods affect the brain in much the same way as cocaine and heroin. When rats consume these foods in great enough quantities, it leads to compulsive eating habits that resemble drug addiction, the study found.
