  Georgia Roswell Park Update...

Roswell Smoking Ban Proposal
2010-07-12
Michelle Wirth
ATLANTA, GA (WABE) - Roswell City Council members could vote to ban smoking in all the city's parks Monday. Councilman Kent Igleheart says he's in favor of the proposed ban due to public health concerns and complaints about smoking at large park gatherings.
"Second hand smoke has been proven to be dangerous, particularly when we're dealing with kids. So I think there are health reasons that make sense for the public."
However, Councilmember Betty Price plans to vote against the proposal, because she believes the measure violates personal freedom.
"It's just overreaching into other peoples' lives. And once we cede that power to the government, that it's okay that they decide how healthy you're going to be, I don't see it as a wise path to be on."
The measure needs four votes to pass. If the ordinance is approved, violators will receive a warning on their first offense. Second time offenders could face fines of up to $1,000.
