A man was stabbed when he asked a group of up to 20 youths to stop smoking on a bus, police said.
Officers were called to the 328 bus in Kilburn Park Road, in north-west London, just after midnight.
The 32-year-old, from London, was stabbed in his upper body and side when he confronted them for smoking what was thought to be cannabis.
All the youths ran off towards Kilburn Estate. The victim is expected to discharged from hospital later.
The youths were wearing dark clothing.
Footballer killed
Police said the man, who did not know his attackers, was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The stabbing comes after a series of high profile attacks raised concerns about growing knife-crime in the UK.
