A 15-year-old student from Springfield Collegiate in Oakbank was arrested at his classroom today after it was alleged he had used a handgun to rob a nearby gas bar and convenience store during his lunch break.
RCMP spokesman Sgt. Steve Saunders said a gas bar in Oakbank was robbed at about 12:40 p.m. by a young person wearing a hoodie and sunglasses.
Saunders said the robber had threatened the gas bar clerk with a handgun and made off with a quantity of cigarettes.
Saunders said officers were able to quickly determine a suspect's identity and believed he was a student at the nearby Springfield Collegiate, located about three blocks east of the school.
Officers went to the school shortly after 1 p.m., Saunders said, adding they contacted the school's principal who escorted them to the boy's classroom.
"He was arrested straight out of the classroom," Saunders said, adding the boy surrendered peacefully to the officers. Saunders denied media reports that the investigating officers had entered the classroom with their weapons drawn. "It didn't happen," he said.
One of the owners of the robbed store, Country Convenience Esso, said the student came in and waved a gun at the 18-year-old female clerk. "She was very upset and had to go home afterwards," the owner, who asked not to be identified, said. "She didn't know if it was real or fake. He got a gym bag full of cigarettes and then ran back to the school."
Sunrise School Division superintendent Dwayne Brothers said the RCMP had informed the community's three schools that the armed robbery had taken place and that an armed person was in the immediate area. Brothers said the schools -- an elementary school, a junior high school and the high school -- immediately implemented security measures, calling students in from lunch and locking all exterior doors.
Brothers said that shortly after 1 p.m., four RCMP officers came to the school and said they were searching for a suspect in an armed robbery who they believed was a student at the school.
Brothers took the officers to the student's classroom, where the principal identified the student during class.
"The officers asked the student to stand and told him he had to go with them," Brothers said. "One officer placed his hands on the student's arm and another officer took his other arm and they all walked out. It was all professionally done."
