No More Smokin'! © 04/03/2004 by Shasta (Edward W. "Shasta" Bates) Mountain Thunder Music (BMI #6981212)
1. Well if you wanna die chokin' - you're not gonna do it with smoke! Why don't I just wrap my little hands - around your little throat? No more smokin' - No more smokin' in this town. - No more smokin' at Hotel Central - No more smokin' at Widow Brown's!
2. Well if you wanna die smokin' - No! You're not gonna do it 'round me - You see we got these things called liberals - from sea to mercury sea - No more smokin' - No more smokin' anywhere - We're the anti-nicotine nazis and we're here to keep the smoke out of your hair -
(Chorus) No more smokin' in the cafes - No more smokin' in your room - No more smokin' in the factory (where I can breathe your noxious fumes) /or/ (but I still smell your cheap perfume) No more smokin' in the White House - No more smokin' big cigars - No more smokin' on the TV - and you probably can't smoke on mars!
3. Well I ain't sayin' it's healthy - Yeah! I'll probably die from it - But, just give me one little bar - where I can imbibe in it - No more smokin' - No more smokin' in this pure world - After all you might influence - an innocent boy or girl -
4. So if you wanna die chokin' - you're not gonna do it with smoke! Why don't I just wrap my little hands - around your little throat? No more smokin' - No more smokin' in this here town. - No more smokin' in this whole damn world - No more smokin' at Widow Brown's!
(2nd Chorus) No more smokin' in the poolhalls - No more smokin' in your own tomb No more smokin' at a concert - Are all our freedom's doomed? - No more smokin' while you're drinking - No more smokin' while you pee - Well, I sure do feel so lucky - to be so f---ing free - Yeah! I sure do feel lucky - to be so f---ing free -

Biography
With one foot planted firmly in the roots of rock, Shasta, a prolific songwriter and singer honed his musical skills in California. Now he plunges us deep into a tapestry of Americana, with his CD, ?Stronger than the Storm?.
Originally from Danbury Connecticut, Shasta began writing poetry when he was growing up in New England and by his teens he was considering songwriting. He heard Bob Dylan and became an instant fan. It was Dylan who influenced him to turn his poetic efforts into song writing. Shasta has received a "Golden Poets Award" and a "Silver Poets Award" from the World of Poetry for his lyrics. Some of his other musical influences include: Dire Straits, Jewel, Neil Young, Warren Zevon, Arlo Guthrie, The Band and The Clash.
Shasta can be heard strumming his 12 string guitar and occasionally blasting his harmonica on his newest CD Stronger than the Storm, but his stories are in the lyrics. The songs are rich blends of philosophy, history, mystery, ecology, and lonesome love ballads. The CD is mainly self-produced, and Shasta had some talented backup. He has an uncanny knack for assembling musicians that fit his style. They add the finishing touch, turning his witty lyrics into thought provoking songs that keep you listening.
On an interesting note, two of the musicians playing on the CD co-wrote the title track, "Stronger than the Storm," with Shasta. Bill and Randy were "just foolin' around with some riffs" while Shasta was going over the lyrics for the song and the words just jumped of f the page in perfect sync with what they were playing. Shasta liked the combination so much, he asked if they wanted to be co-writers and the song was cut on the second take.
In an Option Magazine review, writer Steve Hecox said: "Shasta is clearly a p oet with an overriding sense of social awareness." ". . . excellent songs," ". . . Hot, tight, inventive and totally professional." Definitely a keen observation of this Bard Rock Poet with a twist that gives him a style of his own. A style that is som ewhat a compilation of his many musical influences and an unnerving need to tell the world how he feels about certain people and issues. Since the 90?s, Shasta has been strong on the music scene. He has received air play in Northern Europe and the North western United States. He has traveled through 44 states playing open mikes and jam sessions in local clubs. Shasta has also performed at many San Francisco Bay Area benefits and fairs. At the West Coast Bob Dylan Imitation Contest Shasta won First Plac e in 1990 and 1993, and won second place in New York City, 1991.
In the words of this passionate Bard Rock Poet: "Sometimes you need to poke [people] to get them to lift their heads up out of their overstuffed plate before they're cleared away with the dishes"
